Motel 23 Studios Logo

Motel 23 Logo.png

The 1950s-inspired team logo made for my senior project group.

Because my team was focused on making a horror game about being trapped in a lodge, we figured our team name should reflect a similar vibe. We all brainstormed names and threw ideas against the wall to see what would stick, but we came to the conclusion that our name should be something subtly eerie, but not down right horrifying in case we decide to make non-horror games outside of this project. I suggested "Motel 23" because motels, similar to lodges, aren't scary in it of themselves, but the atmosphere within them can be unnerving and a lot of scary stories tend to take place in rundown, isolated motels. And '23' was referring to the year we all graduate. In unanimous agreement, "Motel 23 Studios" became our name, so I got to work on creating our logo. I took a lot inspiration from actual signage, like '50s motel signs and Las Vegas signs, already existing logos, like Angel Studios' and Rockstar Games' logos from Midnight Club, and fake signs, like the ones found in the deserts of Blaine County in Grand Theft Auto V. After getting a basic, asymmetrical outline similar to many '50s signs, I worked on refining the calligraphy to match the logos and text of '50s appliance companies and used contrasting colors similar to Drexel's colors to make our logo a little more eye-catching. I did everything in Photoshop and then vectorized it in Illustrator.
